Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F to 115°F)
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ⅓ cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast; let it sit for 5 minutes.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture; knead until smooth.
  3. Let dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour.
  4. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Divide the dough into equal pieces and shape into pretzels.
  6. Boil water and baking soda in a pot; boil each pretzel for 30 seconds.
  7. Place boiled pretzels on the baking sheet, brush with beaten egg, and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
  8. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter pretzel, increase the cinnamon sugar topping.
  • Make sure the water temperature is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly.
